Rhode Island is Finalist in the "Race to the Top"
March 4, 2010 - Rhode Island is one of 16 finalists for federal "Race to the Top" funds from the U.S. Department of Education. The finalists were chosen from among 40 states and the District of Columbia. Winners will be chosen from among the 16 finalists and announced in April. To receive federal "Race to the Top" funding states must show progress in reducing achievement gaps and increasing innovation in four critical areas: improving teacher effectiveness, accelerating the performance of low-performing schools, establishing world-class standards and assessments, and developing user-friendly data systems.



 Policymakers Tour New Pre-K Classrooms
Febuary 26, 2010 - View pictures from the tour of the new pre-k classrooms at Beautiful Beginnings Child Care Center and Ready 2 Learn Providence at the Community College of Rhode Island. Governor Donald L. Carcieri, Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist, Senator Juan Pichardo, Representative Grace Diaz, Superintendent Thomas Brady and community leaders toured the two new classrooms; the classes are part of the state's newly launched Pre-K Demonstration Program.

President Obama Releases FY2011 Budget Proposal
President Obama's budget proposal for FY 2011 has also been released. For more information on appropriations to programs affecting children and families, view the Child Welfare League of America's analysis of the President's budget request and a chart of funding for selected children's programs.



Save the Date: 2010 Factbook Breakfast
February 5, 2010 - Save the Date! The 16th annual Rhode Island Kids Count Factbook will be released at a policy breakfast on Monday, April 12th at a new location this year at the Westin Providence, One West Exchange Street, Providence, RI. Rhode Island Kids Count TV Show Spotlights Children's Mental and Behavioral Health
February 5, 2010 - Watch the Rhode Island Kids Count cable television show featuring Cathy Ciano, Executive Director, Parent Support Network of Rhode Island and Elizabeth Earls, President and CEO, Rhode Island Council of Community Mental Health Organizations about mental health services and supports for children and families in Rhode Island.



Federal and Rhode Island Budget Snapshots
February 5, 2010 - Rhode Island KIDS COUNT has prepared snapshots of select provisions affecting children and families in the Governor's FY2011 Budget Request. The Budget snapshots are now available in the following issue areas: K-12 Education and Health Insurance Coverage for Children and Families. Budget snapshots for more issue areas coming soon!

Television Show Highlights Growing Readers Initiative
January 25, 2010 - View the lastest episode of the Rhode Island Kids Count Cable Television Show highlighting the partnership between Central Falls Public Schools and The Learning Community to improve students' reading proficiency districtwide.



Psychiatric Hospitalizations and the Continuum of Care
January 21, 2010 - A new Rhode Island Kids Count Issue Brief provides new information on the nearly 1,696 hospitalizations of children under age 18 with a primary diagnosis of a mental disorder at Rhode Island hospitals. The Children’s Behavioral Health: Psychiatric Hospitalizations and the Continuum of Care Issue Brief provides recommendations on how psychiatric hospitalizations fit into the larger continuum of behavioral health services for children. Young Children Undercounted in Decennial Census
January 11, 2010 - The latest KIDS COUNT Working Paper, "Why Are Young Children Missed So Often in the Census?," examines data that shows that more than 1 million young children under age 10 were missed in the 2000 Census and over three-quarters of a million children under age 5 were missed. This undercount of young children in the Census will cause them to suffer if their community does not receive the resources it needs for schools, clinics or child care centers. Census data are used, in whole or in part, for more than 140 programs that distribute more than $400 billion to states and localities, including child-focused programs.

January 7, 2010 - Read the online version of the new issue of the Rhode Island Kids Count E-News. This issue includes articles on the 2010 Rhode Island General Assembly legislative session, the RI Interfaith Coalition Vigil to reduce poverty, establishing a school funding formula in Rhode Island and the latest Rhode Island Kids Count cable television show.

 

Interfaith Coalition Fights Poverty
Jannuary 5, 2010 - Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition members, including Rhode Island KIDS COUNT,  held the second annual interfaith vigil, One Voice to Reduce Poverty in Rhode Island,  at the Rhode Island State House Rotunda to advocate for measures to reduce poverty.
