The Factbook: A call to action rooted in love, courage, and community

We proudly released the 2026 Rhode Island KIDS COUNT Factbook on May 4 — Rhode Island Independence Day! Rhode Island declared independence from Great Britain two months before all 13 colonies, making us the first sovereign state in the western world. We’ve always been a state of rabble rousers, dissenters against tyranny, and the home of visionary leaders. Rhode Island Independence Day is a celebration of how our state had the courage and independent spirit that helped shape the United States. And we are evidence that voices even from the smallest colony can lead transformative change for all.

As we look ahead, the challenges facing children and families remain significant. Ensuring that all children can thrive will require sustained attention to equity, economic stability, and evidence-based policymaking. It will also require courage. The courage to stand together, to defend one another’s humanity, and to build systems that truly serve all children.

Our commitment to children and families is reflected throughout the Factbook and this year’s book is dedicated to Rhode Island’s immigrant children. This year’s Factbook includes an expanded section on immigrant children and youth, recognizing their growing  presence in Rhode Island and the importance of understanding their experiences.  Since the establishment of modern-day Rhode Island, immigrants have been  integral to the state’s economic success. Rhode Island was the birthplace of the  American Industrial Revolution and ever since has been home to diverse immigrant  populations.  About one in eight residents is foreign-born, and most speak English and are naturalized citizens. As of 2023, nearly one third (30%) of children in Rhode Island lived in an immigrant family.

Every element of the publication was created intentionally, including this year’s cover art, developed in partnership with Conexion Latina Newport and illustrated by Gail Greenwood of Greenwood Associates.

The 2026 cover is inspired by immigrant children holding hearts inscribed with the words “Estamos Aquí” which means “We are here.” The phrase, echoed from the campaign led by the Latino Policy Institute, is both a declaration and a reminder: Latino communities have always been part of the fabric of Rhode Island and will continue to be.

In the background stands La Pigna, the iconic pinecone of Federal Hill and a traditional Italian symbol of hospitality, abundance, and welcome. The imagery connects the experiences of today’s immigrant families with those of earlier generations who also arrived seeking safety, opportunity, and a better future for their children.

At a time when immigrant children and families are facing fear, hostility, and uncertainty, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT is making its position clear: we will not remain silent in the face of harm. Children should never live in fear of violence, separation, or exclusion.

The 2026 Factbook is a love letter to Rhode Island’s immigrant children and families. It is a declaration that they are seen, valued, protected, and deeply loved by their communities.

At Rhode Island KIDS COUNT, we continue to believe that love connects us all: love for our communities, love for our shared future, and love for every child in Rhode Island.

Our children need us to remain steadfast. And our country needs Rhode Island courage.
